Fabric and Craft

Paithani sarees are among India's most celebrated handloom silks, originating in Paithan on the banks of the Godavari River. The distinctive feature of this weave is the oblique interlocking weft — each colour thread interlocks at an angle with its neighbour rather than looping back, creating a reversible design visible on both sides of the fabric. The deep pumpkin orange base silk is woven with real zari thread — an alloy of silver and gold — running through the pallu and border in traditional Maharashtrian motifs of peacocks, lotus flowers, and mango (ambi) patterns.
