Chhath Puja 2026 Saree Guide: What to Wear on 13–16 November (Ghat-Ready Colours & Fabrics)
For Chhath Puja 2026 (13–16 November), wear a saree you can stand in water in: soft cotton or light cotton-silk in orange, red, yellow or saffron, with a modest border and no heavy zari. Keep your pure-silk and zari sarees for the evenings at home. The ghat rewards fabric that dries fast, pleats that stay put and a pallu you can pin firmly.

Chhath Puja 2026 dates: what falls on which day
Chhath is a four-day festival, and each day asks for a different kind of saree.
- Nahay Khay, Friday 13 November: ritual bath and a simple meal. A clean, light cotton saree is all you need.
- Kharna, Saturday 14 November: the day-long fast is broken in the evening with prasad, and the 36-hour nirjala fast begins. This is the day to wear something a little richer at home.
- Sandhya Arghya, Sunday 15 November: offerings to the setting sun at the ghat. Practical, water-ready and bright.
- Usha Arghya, Monday 16 November: offerings to the rising sun, then the fast is broken. You will be at the water before dawn, so think warmth and a secure drape.
Sunrise and sunset times differ by city, so check your local panchang for exact arghya timings.
The colours families reach for
Orange, saffron, yellow and red are the colours most commonly worn, echoing the sun being worshipped and the sindoor many women wear on the day. Many families also prefer fresh, clean, unstitched or simply-finished cloth for the rituals, so follow your own family's custom first. If you are unsure, ask the elder woman of the house before you buy.
Avoid black and very dark navy. They are widely avoided on puja days, and bright colours also read better in the low light of dawn and dusk at the ghat.
Why fabric matters more than weave at the ghat
A 5.5-metre cotton saree weighs around 600–700 g dry. Soak the lower half in a river or pond and it gets noticeably heavier and clings. A heavy zari-bordered silk becomes a real burden, and water marks on silk do not always come out. My honest take: do not wear your Kanjivaram into the water. Wear it for Kharna evening at home, where it will be photographed and admired instead.
- Cotton and Kalamkari cotton: the practical ghat choice. Dries quickly and tolerates washing.
- Kota Doria: airy and light, with a chequered texture that does not cling as much. A good middle ground.
- Maheshwari: a light cotton-silk with a soft drape, good for the dry, ceremonial hours.
- Kanjivaram or Banarasi: home evenings only, such as Kharna prasad.
How to drape for the water
Pre-pleat the saree and pin the pleats at the waist with two safety pins. Bring the pallu over the left shoulder, then tuck a corner firmly into the waist at the back so it cannot trail in the water. Pin the shoulder with one pin, hidden under the fold. Our saree occasions guide has more drape ideas for festival days.

Chhath Puja 2026 saree FAQs
What colour saree should I wear for Chhath Puja?
Orange, saffron, yellow and red are the most common choices, reflecting the sun worshipped during the festival. Many families also keep to simple, clean cloth. Avoid black and follow your own family's custom, since practices vary by region and household.
Can I wear a silk saree for Chhath Puja?
You can, but a light cotton-silk or Maheshwari suits the ceremony better than heavy zari silk. Water and silk do not mix well, so save Kanjivaram or Banarasi for home evenings like Kharna rather than standing in the ghat water.
What are the Chhath Puja 2026 dates?
Nahay Khay is on 13 November, Kharna on 14 November, Sandhya Arghya on 15 November and Usha Arghya on 16 November 2026. Exact arghya timings depend on your city's sunrise and sunset.
