Diwali 2026 Saree Guide: What to Wear on All 5 Days (6–11 November)

Diwali 2026 falls in November: Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November, Padwa on Tuesday 10 November and Bhau Beej on Wednesday 11 November. The short answer on what to wear: save your single heaviest silk, a red, maroon or gold Kanjivaram or Banarasi, for Lakshmi Puja night, and wear lighter soft silks and Chanderis on the other four days.

Why not late October as usual? 2026 is an Adhik Maas year. The extra lunar month added earlier this year pushed every festival after it about three weeks later.

Diwali 2026 dates at a glance, with a saree for each

• Dhanteras, Friday 6 November: a light soft silk in gold or yellow.
• Choti Diwali, 7 or 8 November: a Chanderi or cotton-silk. Panchangs differ; much of Maharashtra takes the pre-dawn abhyanga snan on the 8th.
• Lakshmi Puja, Sunday 8 November: your hero silk. The Pradosh Kaal window runs roughly 6:30 to 8:30 pm IST; check your city's panchang.
• Padwa and Gujarati New Year, Tuesday 10 November: Paithani, or a Patola-motif silk for Bestu Varas.
• Bhau Beej, Wednesday 11 November: an office-friendly soft silk. That's the date on Maharashtra's official holiday list; some North Indian panchangs mark Bhai Dooj on the 10th.

Dhanteras (6 Nov): dress for the market, not the mandap

Dhanteras is a shopping day before it is a puja day. Whether you're on Pune's Laxmi Road, Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar or Delhi's Dariba Kalan, you'll spend hours in packed lanes before the evening puja and the south-facing Yama diya at the door. That's soft-silk territory: gold or yellow, zari at the border rather than all over, and around 450 to 550g instead of an 800g bridal piece. You'll be carrying bags, not posing.

Choti Diwali (7–8 Nov): the 5 am saree

In Maharashtra, Narak Chaturdashi starts before sunrise: oil massage, utane, the first bath of Diwali, new clothes, and often a Diwali Pahat dawn concert. A light Chanderi or cotton-silk is right here. It goes on fast in the half-dark, forgives skin still a little oily from the abhyanga, and breathes through a cool morning that turns warm by noon.

Lakshmi Puja (8 Nov): the one night for your heaviest silk

Red, maroon, deep rani pink and gold are the traditional Lakshmi colours, and a Kanjivaram or Banarasi with real body carries them best. A dense Kanjivaram runs 700 to 900g. You'll feel it by the third aarti: fine for one evening, not for five.

Now the part nobody puts in a Diwali lookbook. Tonight, a saree's fibre content is a safety question, not a style one. You'll light dozens of diyas at knee height, and a child with a phuljhadi is never far from your pallu. Polyester georgette, chiffon and most art silk melt if they catch, and molten synthetic sticks to skin. Silk burns slowly and tends to go out once the flame moves away; cotton doesn't melt. Hence every Diwali safety advisory's rule: natural fibres, no loose ends near flames.

So wear pure silk or cotton for the diya-lighting hour, and pin the pallu at the shoulder or tuck it at the waist while you bend over the lamps. Our 4-pin method holds it without holes. My position: skip the flowing chiffon tonight. A slightly less fashionable Kanjivaram beats a burned forearm.

Padwa (10 Nov): why Paithani is the Maharashtrian answer

Balipratipada is the "half" in Maharashtra's sade teen muhurat, the three and a half days auspicious enough to start something new without checking the timing. It's also the husband-and-wife day: she performs ovalni for him, he gives her a gift, and in many Pune and Nashik homes that gift has come to mean a Paithani. For a couple's pahili Diwali, usually celebrated at the bride's parents' home, the Paithani is close to non-negotiable.

Wear the peacock or lotus pallu out; it's what tells the story in photographs. A woven tissue Paithani gives you that pallu at a fraction of a bridal Paithani's weight, useful on day four of five.

Gujarati families celebrate Bestu Varas, the New Year, the same day, and red Patola motifs or Bandhani suit the fresh start.

Bhau Beej (11 Nov): the Wednesday problem

Bhau Beej is a holiday in Maharashtra but a working Wednesday almost everywhere else. You need a saree that works at a 10 am meeting and at 7 pm when your brother arrives for tilak: a soft silk in pink, peach or turmeric yellow with a thin zari border. And brothers, take note: buy her a soft silk she'll wear ten times, not a 900g Kanjivaram she'll wear once.

Most Diwali guides hand you five showstoppers. I'd push back: five heavy silks in six days is expensive, exhausting and hard on sarees that need airing between wears.
