Saree Delivery to Malaysia (2026): the RM500 Line, 10% LVG Tax & What You Actually Pay

One number decides what a saree costs to bring into Malaysia: RM500 CIF per consignment. Below that line, Malaysian Customs collects no import duty and no sales tax at the border — instead a flat 10% Low-Value Goods (LVG) sales tax applies, charged at checkout by sellers registered with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department. Above RM500, the parcel clears customs the normal way: import duty plus sales tax, assessed on arrival and payable by you as the importer.

At roughly RM1 = ₹23.5 (September 2026), RM500 is about ₹11,750. That matters, because almost every saree in our catalogue sits comfortably below it — but not quite all of them, and a two-saree parcel can cross the line without you noticing.

Why RM500 is the only threshold worth memorising

Malaysia's de minimis is RM500 on CIF value (cost, insurance and freight) per consignment, and it applies to air courier and postal shipments. Under that value, Customs does not assess duty or SST at the border.

Since 1 January 2024 that gap is filled by the LVG regime: a flat 10% sales tax on imported goods sold online for RM500 or less. It is collected by the seller or marketplace at the point of sale, not by Customs on delivery — and only sellers whose annual sales of low-value goods into Malaysia exceed RM500,000 are required to register and charge it. So whether you see a 10% LVG line depends on the seller's registration status, not on the parcel. The honest instruction is: read the checkout total. What changes above RM500

Cross RM500 and the parcel is assessed at the border: import duty at the rate for its tariff line, plus sales tax, plus whatever clearance or disbursement fee your courier charges for fronting the payment. Malaysian apparel and textile duty rates vary by tariff line, so we will not quote you a single percentage — your courier's clearance advice is the only accurate number.

You may have read that the Malaysia–India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (MICECA, in force since 1 July 2011) means zero duty. In practice it rarely helps a personal courier parcel. MICECA preference requires the goods to satisfy rules of origin and to travel with a valid preferential certificate of origin, which a retail e-commerce consignment almost never carries. Assume MFN rates unless your courier tells you otherwise.

Where our sarees fall against the RM500 line

Three sarees in our live catalogue exceed RM500 on their own. Everything else crosses the line only when you combine items — which is exactly what happens when a family orders together for a wedding.

Shipping is free above a threshold, not automatically

Worldwide delivery to Malaysia is free on prepaid orders above ₹6,000 (about RM255). Below that, shipping is ₹1,000. Add blouse stitching and the order moves onto our customised-products profile, where the free-shipping bar rises to ₹7,000 (about RM298) — so a ₹6,500 saree that ships free on its own attracts ₹1,000 shipping once stitching is added. Worth knowing before you add it.

One more thing that matters more than duty: any needle through the cloth voids returns. Blouse stitching, fall, pico, edging, pleating or pre-draping make a saree non-returnable and non-exchangeable. And international orders are return-only — we do not offer exchanges outside India, the return window is two days from delivery, the return courier is at your cost, and reverse import duty at Indian ports is deducted from the refund. Order the saree unstitched if you are at all unsure.

How to tell a real korvai Kanjivaram before you pay

Malaysia's Tamil community knows a pattu saree when it sees one, so here is the check that actually separates weaves. In a genuine korvai Kanjivaram, the border and the body are woven from two separate warps in different colours, and the weavers interlock the weft by hand where the two meet. That join — the pitni or petni — leaves a fine zigzag ridge you can feel with a fingernail on the reverse of the saree. A saree whose border colour simply changes with no ridge at the join was woven on a single warp. It may be a lovely saree, and it is usually cheaper to make, but it is not korvai, and nobody should charge you korvai money for it.

Separately, a Silk Mark hologram from the Silk Mark Organisation of India tells you the yarn is pure silk. It does not certify the weave, the cluster, or that anything was handloomed. Two different questions, two different pieces of evidence.

Ordering for Deepavali 2026

Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026 in Malaysia, with Monday 9 November as the replacement holiday. Courier volumes into Malaysia climb through late October, and a parcel held at customs for assessment is a parcel you cannot plan around — so if your order is likely to sit above RM500, build in extra days for clearance rather than assuming door-to-door transit. FAQ

Do I pay customs duty on a saree sent to Malaysia?

Not if the consignment's CIF value is RM500 or less — Customs assesses no duty or SST at the border on air courier parcels under that threshold. Above RM500, yes: duty plus sales tax plus your courier's clearance fee, payable on delivery.

Will I see the 10% LVG tax at checkout?

Only if the seller is registered for Low-Value Goods with Malaysian Customs, which is required above RM500,000 of annual LVG sales into Malaysia. Check your checkout total — the ringgit figure shown at the end is what you are charged.

Can I split an order into two parcels to stay under RM500?

Each consignment is assessed separately, so in principle smaller parcels stay under the line. But consignments deliberately split to avoid assessment can be treated as one, and you will usually pay more in shipping than you save. Not a strategy we would build an order around.

Does MICECA make Indian sarees duty-free in Malaysia?

Not automatically. Preference under MICECA requires the goods to meet rules of origin and to arrive with a valid preferential certificate of origin. Retail courier parcels generally do not carry one, so MFN rates apply.
